Learner Requirements
Learners need a basic command of English (defined as Level 2). While we are often able to provide support to people who do not have English as a first language, our ability to do so is limited by the time available and the number of people who require assistance. Please contact us for further guidance.
Due to the practical activity assessments required to certify competency in first aid, learners require the physical capability to demonstrate CPR and other first aid techniques. Should someone be unable to complete these assessments, for any reason, they will not receive a certificate of competency. Instead, a certificate of attendance will be provided.

EYFS and Ofsted Requirements for Paediatric First Aid Training
(Guidance Purposes Only)
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework provides the standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to age five in England. Among its crucial mandates is the requirement for Paediatric First Aid (PFA) training.
Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, is responsible for inspecting services providing education and skills for learners of all ages. The information below outlines the EYFS and Ofsted requirements for PFA training, highlighting its importance, content, and the qualifications required.
Importance of Paediatric First Aid
Paediatric First Aid is a vital skill for anyone involved in the care of young children. It ensures that caregivers can respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, potentially saving lives and minimizing the impact of injuries. The EYFS framework mandates PFA training to ensure that all early years providers can offer safe environments for children.
EYFS Requirements for Paediatric First Aid Training
The EYFS framework stipulates specific requirements for Paediatric First Aid training, including:
Training Content
PFA training must cover a comprehensive range of topics to equip caregivers with the skills needed to handle emergencies involving young children. These topics include:
-
Resuscitation procedures for infants and children
-
Treatment of shock
-
Management of bleeding, burns, and scalds
-
Dealing with head injuries
-
Handling choking incidents
-
Responding to anaphylactic reactions
-
Managing fractures and dislocations
-
Recognition and treatment of common illnesses
-
Record-keeping and communication with parents and emergency services
Our Paediatric First Aid training covers all these subjects and many more!
Training Duration
The EYFS framework requires that PFA training courses last at least 12 hours. This duration ensures that participants receive thorough instruction and ample practice time to master the necessary skills. Online versions do not meet the requirements for the assessment of practical skills. Certificates must be renewed every 3 years.
Our Paediatric First Aid Training is 12 hours in duration, held over 2 days and is delivered face-to-face to assess and ensure practical competency.
Ofsted Requirements for Paediatric First Aid Training
Ofsted inspects and regulates services to ensure adherence to the EYFS framework. Their requirements for Paediatric First Aid training align closely with those of the EYFS, with additional emphasis on ensuring that all staff members meet the necessary standards.
Staff Ratios and Coverage
Ofsted requires that childcare settings maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios and ensure that at least one person with a current PFA certificate is present at all times when children are on the premises. This requirement extends to outings and trips, where a qualified first aider must also be in attendance. According to the DfE’s EYFS 2024 update, for staff to be counted in “qualified staff-to-child ratios”, those qualified after 30th June 2016, must hold and maintain a valid Paediatric First Aid certificate.
